Often, parents of children with special needs face many challenges in the process of inclusion into kindergartens and schools. Often, professionals themselves feel uncertainty when seeking an individual approach and building an inclusive environment that is welcoming and stimulating for every child.
In Bulgaria, inclusive education has been set up in a regulatory framework for several years, but in reality all stakeholders are currently looking for practical and effective solutions for successful inclusion of every child.
The aim of the project is to explore and exchange experience with a leading country such as Iceland, as well as to come up with appropriate solutions and practices which could be adapted to the Bulgarian context.
Our aim is to have:
- more successful and confident parents and parenting organizations to support children with special needs early on and facilitate their inclusion in kindergartens and schools, and
- more successful professionals who are equipped with more tools, methods and strategies for building an inclusive environment
Project Partner
State Diagnostic and Counseling Center (SDCC) in Iceland was established in 1986. Since 2003 SDCC is governed, according to the special law (83/2003), first by the Ministry of Social Affairs and after that by the Ministry of welfare (including social and health issues). SDCC is the only tertiary institute which serves children with severe disabilities of neurodevelopment in Iceland (Autism, intellectual difficulties, Cerebral palsy, rare diseases).
SDCC's director is a pediatrician. The team consists of approximately 60 people including behavioural analytics, labor therapists, social workers, pediatricians, physiotherapists, psychologists, teachers with special education and speech and language pathologists. The hallmarks of SDCC are its emphasis on transdisciplinary teamwork, early detection and intervention, family-oriented services and clinical research.
The mission of SDCC is to guarantee that children and youths with developmental delays will receive diagnostic and consultation and will have an access to resources for improving their quality of life.
